Circle Dancing

Circle dancing is something we at BIADS are passionate about, it is a dance form practised throughout the world but here in Barnsley the steps have been especially adapted for people affected by dementia.

We are lucky in Barnsley that the PCT, under the guidance of Kath Kershaw (former arts therapist) developed circle dancing sessions which have now been running for several years.

Circle dancing is a way that carers and people with dementia can come together as couples and friends again and enjoy the music and dance steps and the social activity that may no longer be available to them.

Circle Dancing Circle Dancing

Pam Evans, one of our leaders, first started circle dancing with the PCT when she was caring for her friend who had early onset Alzheimer's and found that the sessions were invaluable.

'The steps were really easy and because it was a new experience we both learnt together (for once I wasn't telling her to do something). The music was lovely and getting the steps right was the least important thing, rather it was the chance for us to be friends again and not carer and person with the illness. Usually when we arrived each week you could see the worries and frustrations of the day or week etched on people's faces but by the end they were replaced with smiles and relaxation.'

Originally under the flag of the Alzheimer's Society we were able to set up our own circle dancing group which has now been running for nearly three years. Now as BIADS we intend to carry on with our group and develop the service which we believe is so very beneficial to those with the illness and their carers.
