Befriending Service for Carers

If you are the carer of someone with dementia the road can be a lonely one and often our own family and friends find it hard to understand or cope with the illness. We can match you with a trained volunteer who will be there for you, the carer, throughout the illness offering you help and friendship.

Carer Support

Jacky Phelan is our Carer Support Worker. Her job is to ensure that all carers who make contact with us have access to all of the information and advice they need and are fully aware of the services BIADS is able to offer them.

Jacky Phelan

Carer support can be as involved as you wish, maybe just a phone call every couple of months to see how things are going if that is all you need or maybe we will see you every week at events or speak to you whenever you have a question or need advice.

Cognitive Stimulation Therapy

Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) is a group treatment specifically designed for people with dementia. It is the only non-pharmacological treatment recommended by NICE guidelines to promote memory function.

CST is a programme of group activities designed to use existing memory skills and stimulate new ways of recalling information, opinions and personal values. CST sessions run for one hour twice a week for seven weeks and then weekly for four months.

CST is run in conjunction with NHS Barnsley Day Services Team.

For more information contact BIADS on 01226 280057.

Circle Dancing

Circle dancing is something we at BIADS are passionate about, it is a dance form practised throughout the world but here in Barnsley the steps have been especially adapted for people affected by dementia.

If you would like to join us circle dancing why not contact us to find out more details and see if this is suitable for you.

BIADS offers two circle dancing classes.

Circle Dancing for Couples (Carers and the person with dementia)
These classes aim to promote the bond between carers and the person they care for with dementia to create a stronger and more sustainable relationship through circle dancing.

BIADS Circle Dances
These classes are run on a more social basis - anyone can join in.
You dont need a partner.

There is a small charge for both classes towards room hire and refreshments.

Jabadao

Jabadao is music and movement and is ideal for people with dementia.
There is no right or wrong way to take part - you just 'go with the music'.

BIADS Singers

Most of us love music and having the chance to sing the songs we love. We have found that people with dementia are still able to participate and get joy from this activity. When communicating becomes harder and short term memories are wiped away those affected by dementia retain the ability to remember the songs they have always loved from their past and like nothing better than to be able to join with friends to have a good old sing-a-long.

Gareth mayor01

We hold regular informal singing groups a year, see our BIADS Singers page where everyone is welcome to come along and enjoy themselves.

Tell us what your favourite songs are, feel free to get up and dance and join in as much or as little as you want. The singing sessions are for carers and people with the illness and are free to take part.

If you need to know more please visit our BIADS Singers page.

Keeping In Touch (KIT) Club

If your role as carer ends because your loved one passes away or enters long term care you can often feel abandoned by the services you have been involved with. Also the loss, after what can be many years of caring, of the focus in your life can leave you feeling isolated with bereavement difficulties specific to this illness.

Our group meets regularly to support each other through this period and helps us to get back into mainstream life.

BIADS Monthly Meetings - Time for Tea

BIADS Monthly Meetings are held at the Baptist Church, Union Street, Barnsley, S70 1JJ, between 2pm and 4pm.

Here members have the chance to relax, get together, enjoy light refreshments whilst finding out what's happening at BIADS and how they can get involved.

Meet people who are coping with living and caring for people with dementia in a friendly and safe environment who can offer information, experiences, advise and support to people in the same situation as themselves.

We are hoping that for some meetings we will be able to have guest speakers who can give information and advice about living and coping with dementia.
