December 2011
On Friday 2nd December members of BIADS met at the Ramada Encore Hotel for their Christmas Lunch. Over 60 people were treated to the usual festive fare and after the meal sang carols and circle danced to Christmas favourites. Even Mother Christmas visited us and handed out chocolates - obviously Father Christmas is too busy to be making visits this early!!! The afternoon was made even more special when the former President of Barnsley Rotary Club, Wendy Bell, presented our Chairman, Bill Cowin, with a cheque for £1,000 knowing all money donated to BIADS every penny will be used in Barnsley to support people affected by dementia. Click the link for pictures.
The SD Fashion Show held on 8th December raised £298.20 and we all bought fabulous Christmas bargains galore. Thank you to SD Fashions and all of our loyal customers. The next SD Fashion show will be 7th August 2012 at the Alex WMC in Royston. Watch out for tickets for sale later in the year.
We recently held a Christmas volunteer party for our wonderful volunteers to thank them for all of their hard work for the charity in 2011. Forty three of the seventy plus volunteers were able to attend the party held at Sheffield Road Baptist church where they had a buffet lunch served by staff. Our team of volunteers are the backbone of BIADS, without them we would not be able to support the number of people affected by dementia in Barnsley that we do. We are extremely grateful to all of our volunteers and wish them a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Our Christmas Time for Tea took place on Monday 12th December at the Baptist Church on Sheffield Road from 2pm to 4pm. Old and new members came along to have a cuppa and a biscuit or a mince pie or two. The BIADS' singers also entertained us with a variety of Christmas songs.
John Lewis of Sheffield presented us with 50 tins of biscuits all beautifully wrapped to give to carers and people with dementia at our Christmas party on Monday 19th December. Along with fifteen tins and boxes of confectionery donated by Barnsley Junior Chamber International we were able to invite Santa along to hand out the gifts to members that attended the event. The presents were provided through the local business initiative 'Cares for Christmas' where businesses are invited to fulfil the Christmas wishes of local charities. We were thrilled to be picked to have our Christmas wishes fulfilled by John Lewis and would like to thank them on behalf of our members who often feel undervalued and isolated in their own communities. BIADS are charity of the year for Junior Chamber International and they held a chocolate evening, accepting confectionery from their members to be gifts for BIADS. It is very reassuring to know that the unpaid work our carers do with such dedication is recognised in their communities.
Our annual Christmas party at East Dene WMC on the 19th December was a great success with over a hundred people attending. Thank you to everyone who worked on the fantastic buffet which seemed to go down very well and to Santa for handing out the gifts from Cares for Christmas. We hope you all enjoyed the Staff 'entertainment' which took months of rehearsals and preparation in Jacky's attic bedroom and Janine's dining room. We are hoping to have a video of the performance available in the New Year after Mark Broadhead has managed to make us all look beautiful!!!

September 2011
On a fine Friday 23rd September 2011 we went on a day trip to Knowsley Safari Park near Liverpool. Whilst on the coach we had a five mile safari drive through the park giving excellent views of the animals roaming freely throughout their large enclosures. The animals on show included lions, tigers, deer, bisson, camels, hunting dogs and rhinos. Unfortunately our driver Taffy chickened out of driving through the monkey enclosure where baboons jumped on cars to give passengers a better view in return for possible damage to their vehicles. Other attractions in the walk-around area of the park included the bug house, meercats, otters, a giraffe house, elephant enclosure and sea-lion show.
The September winner of our Everyones a Winner Draw was Sheila O'Carroll.

The fashion show that was held on 2nd August at the Alexandra WMC in Royston was another resounding success. Around 80 ladies and a few gentlemen came along to see Simon's models wearing a wonderful selection of high street fashions at rock bottom prices. There were some fantastic bargains with M&S, Next and C&A all represented at a fraction of the prices in the shops. It's doubtful that anyone went home without something and we raised over £450 for BIADS' funds. Our next fashion show is at East Dene WMC on Thursday 3rd November so if you missed this show please note the next date in your diary!

Linda and Pam and the trustees wanted volunteers to know how grateful they are for all of the hard work volunteers have done and apologise if they have been unable to acknowledge that your support has been fundamental to BIADS success during this whirlwind phase.
Manager Linda Pattison said, "The majority of our volunteers are former carers of their loved ones with dementia and because they are experts by experience they are as passionate about BIADS as we are. All of us want to ensure that we are here providing and improving support services for those affected now and in the future by this devastating illness." Thank you all.

November 2010
Another milestone for BIADS - 1st November 2010
Monday 1st November was another milestone for BIADS as we moved into another office in BCB's building - making three rooms in total for our use. The upstairs office is being used by Linda and Pam and the two rooms downstairs are for admin and volunteers with a small area for meetings.
We also had a new computer system set up for us by Cultrix computers which has all of us networked with easy access to the internet. This is an absolute godsend as the IT we have been using up to now has been quite old and not suitable for our needs. This purchase was made possible by two grants from South Yorkshire Community Foundation and VAB. Having reliable and up to date IT equipment is really important.
We also took on our third member of staff that day - Kathleen Broadhead - our first admin assistant who is working for 16 hours a week, initially until the end of December - but we're keeping our fingers crossed for more funding!
We are already reaping the benefits of more space, new computers and last but not least our new admin assistant. So after a few short months in existence we're already moving onwards and upwards. What a team!
SDS presented their latest fashion show including names like Marks & Spencer, Principles and other well known brands at East Dene Working Mens Club on Thursday the 4th November. The weather was appalling so we didn't have as good a turnout as at previous shows but nevertheless we raised £380. Look out for more dates in 2011.
The sponsored slim that was started at our launch event back in July recently ended. On Monday 8th November a presentation was held in the Mayor's Parlour for those who took part.
So far £2,000 has been raised with more to come.
Allan Cooper, our Vice Chairman, was presented with the prize for the most weight lost by an individual.
BIADS also won the prize for the organisation that lost the most weight. Didn't he and we do well !!

BIADS hosted a table top sale at Cawthorne Village Hall on Saturday 9th October from 10am to 4pm. There were 16 stalls selling everything from jewelry to bric a brac to knitted dolls to cakes. The cake stalls were very popular and sold out. Overall we made £500 so it was well worth the effort.
On Thursday 28th October over 100 people packed into the Ramada Encore Hotel to watch the spectacular Every Inch a Woman fashion show staged by Every Inch A Woman which is based on Shambles Street.
The shop is a dress agency for curvy ladies and also has a 'Smaller Version' upstairs. It seemed like dozens of models wore hundreds of items of clothing and the show was themed around the winter months.
It was an amazing and very well organised event. We would like to thank everyone involved in making the evening an outstanding success and to date we have received over £700!
Christmas came early to Dodworth on Saturday 30th October.
Our sale and coffee morning

We have an extensive songbook of old familiar much loved songs as well as the chance to learn new easy on the ear tunes that can be enjoyed by all.
Our day trip to Chatsworth House on Friday the 3rd September was a beautiful, sunny day. The first stop was at a small shopping outlet where we did a little shopping and had lunch. At Chatsworth Park we went around the house before taking the chance to look around the shops. Our final stop of the day at the Farm Shop was interrupted by an amazing 25 minute air display by the Red Arrows - all in close proximity!
More than 100 people attended the Dodworth Colliery Brass Band Concert at Ardsley House on Sunday the 5th September. The music ranged from show songs to Dvorak to a medley of wartime favourites. The concert raised £450 which will be used exclusively in Barnsley to support people affected by dementia.

The Mayor has chosen BIADS as one of her charities of the year and has already donated £1,000 to us at our Launch Day back in July.
Our first BIADS sponsored walk took place on 26th September and we were lucky with the weather once again - it was cool but dry - perfect conditions for walking!
Fifty people took part and made it a very special occasion for us. We released 50 balloons at the start in celebration of the lives of our loved ones affected by dementia.
Sponsorship is now being collected and we will be able to announce the full amount collected soon. So far over £800 has been raised with more to come! Thanks to all who participated and to Worsborough Mill for their kind support
On Tuesday 28th September we were invited to go along to the Rotary Club at Ardsley House for a lovely dinner followed by a 'Call my bluff - wine tasting'. What more could we ask for food and drink?

Wendy Bell, President of the Rotary Club this year, has picked us as one of her charities and we are very
grateful for their support.

August 2010
August heralds the start of a new BIADS service.
BIADS Monthly Meetings will held at the Baptist Church, Union Street, Barnsley, S70 1JJ, between 2pm and 4pm starting from August 2010. Here members have the chance to relax, get together, enjoy light refreshments whilst finding out what's happening at BIADS and how they can get involved. We are hoping that for some meetings we will be able to have guest speakers who can give information and advice about living and coping with dementia.
It was nice to see lots of familiar and some new faces at the August BIADS Monthly Meeting. Most of the biscuits and buns went down a treat and members were informed of the forthcoming events on offer.
At the meeting your webmaster managed to trackdown a video of some BIADS circle dancers performing the Bells of Norwich.
You can checkout these 'movers and shakers' on the Circle Dancing page though you will have to install Quicktime on your computer - If you havent got this you are automatically taken to the site.
On Tuesday 3rd August we held our first fashion show in Royston at the Alexandra WMC. Over 100 people attended and we raised over £600!
Monk Bretton Cricket Club hosted the Mayor's Charity Cricket Match on Sunday 15th August 2010 at Monk Bretton Cricket Club, Cross Street, Monk Bretton. A Mayor's Select 11 played a Leader's Select 11 in a 20/20 over match. Around £500 was raised for BIADS through a ballon race and the Mayor's charity.
Our thanks go to the Midhopestones Gala Committee who on 24th August presented BIADS with £1,000 donated as proceeds from their village fair held in June.
BIADS first ever collection at Morrisons Supermarket at Cortonwood Retail Park between Wednesday the 25th August and Friday the 27th August raised the magnificent amount of £726.
We would like to thank Simon Nunswick and his staff at Morrisons for allowing us to collect, all our collectors who stood and accepted donations and last but not least the generous people of Barnsley for their support.
A race night at Gawber Road Club on 26th August raised £520.
The first ever winner of our Everyones a Winner Draw made on the 31st August was Karen Turner who kindly donated her winnings back to BIADS.
You too could be a winner. There is still time to join our September draw.

July 2010
The beginning of July saw the official launch of BIADS.
The BIADS Launch Day
at Barnsley town hall presided by the mayor was a success.
Many people attended and members looked resplendent in their bright red BIADS polo shirts.
A very successful Garden Party was hosted by Randy and Gaynor Bamford on Saturday the 24th July. The event raised an astounding £950. Many thanks to all who bought tickets and who took part in the festivities.
The next day, Sunday the 25th July BIADS attended the 12th Classic Car Rally at Cannon Hall run by Barnsley Rotary Club where we held a ballon race. It was quite spectacular when all the ballons were released at the same time.
